A Poem from Meditations on Death

Somewhere along the childhood way

I got the mistaken impression

That passing out

And passing away

Meant the same thing

So when I heard my parents talking

About a cousin who had passed out

During a particularly strenuous exercise

In Army basic training

I thought man these people sure are cavalier

About their nephew

Buying the farm

I also spent the next year thinking

I didn’t have that cousin anymore

Imagine my surprise
