A Note from the Author
I wrote the first draft of this novel back in the summer of 1983. Second or third novel I'd taken a stab at but the first I'd ever finished, and over the next forty years, in between The Fraternity and Trombone Answers and all the others, I rewrote it four or five times without getting it exactly where I wanted it. Finally it hit me: To make this book work, I was going to have to throw out 75 percent of the original plot. And that's what did the trick.
